Infertility

Infertility

A man or woman is considered to be infertile if they have been trying to conceive for at least one year without success. In almost all cases either the man or the woman has something with them that prevents it from happing. In very rare instances both partners are deemed as being infertile. The statistics show 1/3 of infertility cases are due to the woman and 1/3 are due to the man. The other 1/3 is due to problems that can't be identified.

Testing is done to determine what the problem is and then possible solutions are implemented to try to remedy it. Infertility can be a huge issue for a couple that really wants to have a baby. Supporting each other and open communication is very important. The one that is infertile will feel guilty and blame themselves. They may have fears that their partner is going to leave them because of it.

After complete evaluation is done, the doctor will be able to give a prognosis. Sometimes the underlying reasons for infertility can't be found. The couple will learn about the best times to conceive due to the woman ovulating. Both will be encouraged to eat a healthy diet and to get enough exercise. Refraining from drugs and alcohol will be recommended as well.

There are several different types of fertility treatments that can be tried based on the information for the couple. Medications may be administered, underlying medical conditions may need to be addressed, and the development of sperm and the eggs needs to be closely monitored.

The more advanced procedures for infertility involve taking the egg from the woman, mixing in the sperm from the man, and then replacing the egg inside of the woman. The success rates for fertility treatments vary but there is always hope of a couple conceiving a baby. The more factors that are addressed the higher those chances become.

The cost of fertility treatments can be very expensive, and not all couples can afford them. For others, even though they have tried everything they just aren't able to conceive. As a result they may need to consider some alternatives such as a surrogate mother or adopting a child.

Today's Tip On Infertility

While IVF ICSI procedures are widely used, there is not a standard of care set up in the field of medicine to determine which cases should receive ICSI and which should not. There are some fertility clinics that choose to use this procedure only when the male involved has severe male infertility issues, while other clinics choose to use it for several different fertility issues. The majority of clinics that handle IVF or in vitro fertilization procedures lie in the middle ground of when to use this procedure. The success rate for ICSI varies depending on the individual situation, the technique used and the skill of the person performing the particular procedure.
